International Women's Day

On the 19th of March in 1911, more than one million people rallied in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. This marked the first International Women's Day campaigning for women's right to work, vote, be trained, hold public office and end discrimination.

This year millions will still be fighting for many of the same freedoms, but we've come a long way in one hundred years. While there are still struggles for equality, International Women's Day is also an opportunity to acknowledge the contribution of women to the strengthening of international peace and security.

What:   International Women's Day (8 March) is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. In some places like China, Russia, Vietnam and Bulgaria, International Women's Day is a national holiday.
Why:   Suffragettes campaigned for women's right to vote. The word 'Suffragette' is derived from the word "suffrage" meaning the right to vote. International Women's Day honours the work of the Suffragettes, celebrates women's success, and reminds of inequities still to be redressed. The
