Mentor Registration Deadline: Apr. 13, 2012

We hope YOU will agree to be a part of this fun and informative annual event, which is co-sponsored by William Peace University’s Office of Career Services, Office of Engagement and the Alumni Board and supported through gifts made by alumni and our community partners.

We need YOU to bring your networking skills to William Peace University and model professional conversation and networking techniques, tips and tricks for our students.  Preceded by a one-hour professional etiquette training seminar for members of our senior class, Julie Ricciardi, Vice President for the Office of Engagement, provides students with the “Do’s” and “Don’ts” of professional etiquette for interviews, professional gatherings, meetings and networking.

The time you spend with our students is an opportunity for them to practice what they’ve learned before they go out into the professional world as job seekers.

WHAT IS MY commitment?

  • Wear professional or business casual attire.
  • Bring 25 business cards to exchange with students.
  • Peruse WPU’s list of majors (to the left) and think about who you may know in these fields as a conversation topic.
  • During the networking session, you will be the “Mentor” initiating and modeling the conversation, shaking hands correctly, helping lead and guide the conversation and then allow the student to “rehearse” these skills in short periods of time after being prompted by the emcee.

THE RETURN?

  • Provides up to 10 opportunities for students to enhance their conversation and interview skills in a short amount of time.
  • Builds a growing network of those who care about empowered young professionals in the workforce.
  • Strengthens students’ networking power and interviewing skills while also giving them a competitive edge.
  • Most importantly, strengthens the students’ personal and professional growth.

THINGS TO REMEMBER:

  • For many of these students, this may be their first time to work on these valuable skills.
  • You are modeling professional networking behavior.
  • Your networking skills are what we are interested in; connecting with someone directly in your career field is not as important as simply connecting!
  • You will repeat the same skills throughout the hour you are volunteering, remember to be patient and also watch and listen to the students you are mentoring as they grow in just an HOUR with you.
  • Don’t forget to create a profile on the mentor module on College Central Network. Visit www.collegecentral.com/peace, select alumni (even though you are note an alumni), select mentor network, and enter “alumni” as the password.  This way, students can also connect with you through the network before and after the event.

WHY IS PARTICIPATION IMPORTANT?

Everyone isn’t awarded the unique opportunity of sharpening their skills before their first interview. The endless dinners, golf outings and cocktail parties that most people dread, give them a competitive advantage and their confidence, leadership and interpersonal skills are greatly enhanced.

As members of the Business Professional Women’s Federation, your investment of time will make a life-changing impact on the next generation of young leaders.
